ARIN Routing Registry - FAQ

What is the purpose of Internet routing registration?
Internet routing registries, as described in the Routing Policy Specification Language, RPSL (RFC2622) document, provides a view of the global routing policy to improve the integrity of the Internet's routing. ARIN's routing registry provides data for network operators to configure their routers from the description of the policy for one autonomous system (aut-num class) combined with the description of a router (inet-rtr class), mainly providing router ID, autonomous system number of the router, interfaces and peers of the router, in addition to the various routing registry database mappings from AS sets to ASes (as-set class), and from origin ASes and route sets to route prefixes (route and route-set classes).
How do objects become part of the routing registry as instances of each RPSL class?
E-mailing rr@arin.net with a request provides a template, submission, or an update. See the instructions sections on the various RPSL classes in the ARIN routing registry database. A help file is available by e-mailing rr@arin.net with the word "help" as the subject line or via the web.
What is the first step?
E-mail rr@arin.net with a maintainer-request-template to have an ARIN IP analyst review your organization's maintainer request. When ARIN processes your maintainer request, you'll receive a reply with the object's data.
What registrations should my organization submit after it has a mntner object listed in ARIN's routing registry?
You may coordinate with each listed coordinator in ARIN's WHOIS database to submit an aut-num template for your autonomous systems registrations and an inetnum template for your IP network number registrations.
How does the ARIN routing registry handle POC data for ARIN handles?
At this time the ARIN database does not process POC handles. The database will not process person or role objects and will accept the initial inetnum submission and initial autnum submission as registrations by matching the sender's e-mail address with the coordinator information in the current ARIN numbers registry. Please see ARIN's WHOIS Search (also available at the top of this screen) to check the current registration status and the AS Number Modification and the Network Modification templates to change POCs for AS number and network registrations in ARIN's database.
How does one query the ARIN routing registry?
Help in querying the ARIN routing registry database is available by issuing the command:

whois -h rr.arin.net HELP
